Janel Group was established in New York City in 1974 as a company specializing in quality import customs brokerage and related transport services.
Founder James N. Jannello had a vision of a full-service company built on delivering the best customer experience in the marketplace. With that focus, Janel quickly established itself as a go-to air and ocean freight forwarder and customs broker. The success led to a Year One expansion into export services and trucking and warehousing.
Based on the strength and success of our New York operation, Janel set about establishing a national network of offices, opening its first branches in Chicago (Midwest Region) and Los Angeles (West Region) in 1979. This successful trio of offices was joined in 1994 by our Atlanta (Southeast) office, which took root and grew as well.
From 2000 to 2002, Janel became a truly international family with the opening of branded branch offices in Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Shenzhen, giving us a strong foothold in mainland China and Southeast Asia. Reliable offices in this important region enabled the company to grow quicker than any other time in its history.
A New Chapter
Having weathered the economic crisis of the late 2000s, a time had come for a fresh look at the business. After 40 years at the helm, founder Jim Jannello handed the company off to the current ownership in 2013. The team remained in place, and building upon that solid foundation, Janel began a process of data-driven business assessment and upgrade under its current leadership. This led to the acquisition of Alpha International / President Container Lines in 2014, and Liberty International in 2015. With these companies came revenue, a bench of additional talent, new markets and greater strength for the entire Janel network. Janel uses this platform to push forward an aggressive business development strategy including both organic growth and additional acquisitions.
